Gabion mesh is also known as river gabion mesh, wire mesh, gabion mat, gabion box net bag, zinc-aluminum alloy gabion, hexagonal mesh, etc. Gabion mesh is made of high corrosion resistance, high strength, and ductility low-carbon steel wire or PVC-coated steel wire. It is mechanically woven according to ASTM A 975 and EN10223 standards. The diameter of the low-carbon steel wire used varies according to the project design requirements. Usually between 2.0-4.0mm. If it is a hexagonal mesh woven with PVC-coated metal wire, use PVC (metal) wire with an outer diameter of 3.0mm to 4.0mm. The wire of the outer frame edge uses a wire that is one size thicker than the hexagonal wire. The tensile strength of the steel wire is not less than 38kg/m2, and the weight of the metal coating is usually higher than 245g/m2. The diameter of the edge wire of the gabion mesh is usually larger than the diameter of the mesh wire, and the length of the double-wire twisted part shall not be less than 50mm. To ensure that the metal coating and PVC coating of the twisted part of the steel wire are not damaged. The river gabion is mainly used to guide river water. The river usually flows along the inherent riverbed. The river may have a naturally formed tortuous river channel. If a flood occurs, the water volume is unlimited and the water flow is turbulent. The water flow will tend to flow straight under inertia, and will violently impact the original riverbed and dyke, which may cause the river to change course, which will cause endless disasters. In order to reduce the erosion of the river bank by the turbulent water flow, gabion boxes or gabion mats are laid on the inner side of the river bank or the edge of the riverbed. The turbulent river water directly hits the gabion boxes or gabion mats, thus protecting the river bank or riverbed. In the winding river channel, the river water will turn and flow along the existing river channel due to the gabion boxes or gabion mats. In this way, the river water is guided to a safe level. Gabion mesh is also used in flood spillway and diversion dam to guide or restrain floods.
